The cave grew darker with each step further inside. John reached his hands out along the wall of the cave listening closely for any sounds of trouble. He wasn’t sure if he was followed, but even still, he was also not sure that he was alone in this cavern. What if he had gotten this far too late? It was no good to think of that now. He could only move forward and hope that he would find what he was looking for, and that he could find a way out. Leaving a trail of any kind only made it easier for someone to follow him, so he had ditched that notion early on.
So here he was, standing with one hand on the damp wall of the cave staring into blackness. He was breathing heavily and had to take a few seconds to catch his breath. All that he could hear, besides his heart beating like a drum in his chest, was drops of water somewhere deeper in the cave. With renewed resolve to finish this on his terms he lit his flashlight and began his descent into the dark unknown.
A few hundred yards inside he came to what he thought was a fork in the cave, but was the path to the right was actually a small den. He ducked inside to investigate. The ceiling was a little shorter in there and there wasn’t much room to move around at all. He had just decided to continue on his way when the light from his flashlight caught a gleam of a smooth rock in the back. He could tell from the shape and polished look of this rock that someone had put this here for a reason. Holding his light on it, he was able to make out some markings. The marks looked like someone had chiseled numbers into the stone. He rustled around in his pack and began to scribble the message down. He may not have time to figure it out right away, but he thought it would be wise to keep track of anything he finds down here. There is no telling how useful any tidbit of information might be. It was hard to see all the marks in the poor lighting, but he did his best to copy it down correctly.
We happen to have that page from his notebook and here is what he had written:
1 16 5 18 19 15 14 3 15 21 12 4 19 20 1 18 5 1 20 20 18 21 20 8 6 15 18 13 15 14 20 8 19 15 14 5 14 4 1 14 4 14 5 22 5 18 19 5 5 1 20 8 9 14 7 9 20 9 19 14 20 21 14 20 9 12 19 15 13 5 15 14 5 9 19 23 9 12 12 9 14 7 20 15 7 5 20 21 16 3 12 15 19 5 20 15 9 20 1 14 4 20 1 11 5 1 7 15 15 4 12 15 15 11 1 20 23 8 1 20 9 19 2 5 8 9 14 4 20 18 21 20 8 20 8 1 20 20 8 5 20 18 21 20 8 2 5 7 9 14 19 20 15 13 1 20 20 5 18.
John knew that once he found the meaning behind all of this he would have to send a message quick to his instructor and then wait for further details. There was a moment of indecision as he contemplated his next move. Should he decipher this code now, or should he just venture ahead and hope there is nothing important in the message? Just posing the question helped him to realize that there was no need to go on if he couldn’t break the code. No doubt the information here was going to be helpful and when the time came for him to use it, he was sure that he wouldn’t have the time to decipher it then. So he set to work in that little cell.
After a few minutes he was satisfied with his findings. It wasn’t too hard, but what did it mean? This would require closer inspection of things he had taken for granted. He headed back out of the cave so he could send his message.
Parents: This class is the high school equivalent of Algebra IA. It is the first semester of Algebra. Most students in this class will take Algebra I when they get to high school. Some students may elect to take Algebra IB in summer school so they can take Geometry next year. Other may elect to take Algebra IA again. Most private schools do their own testing for math placement.
