Teaching Children the Books of the Bible

Fourth grade students need to learn how to look up Bible references for themselves. A key step towards achieving this is to memorize the names of all the books of the Bible in the correct order.

Children should  learn the books of the New Testament over a period of about four weeks, followed by the books of the Old Testament.

It is usually a good idea to spread the teaching out over four (4) weeks for the New Testament, and six (6) weeks for the Old Testament.

Teaching Method & Schedule

Each of the book names is printed on an individual piece of card stock about 7 inches by 1.5 inches. The design is such that each piece looks like the spine of a book. Different colors are used to indicate the different categories of books (Historical, Epistles, Prophecy), and also to make it visually more interesting.

I recommend printing the New and Old Testament teaching aids in color and on card stock. (1) Cut out each book of the Bible; (2) Add a small piece of VelcroŽ to the back of each book; (3) Use a piece of flannel to display/attach each book to as you teach.

Navigating Around The Bible

Being able to quickly navigate around the Bible is a necessity for every fourth grader. Use the following analogy with your student to explain how to find particular verses in the Bible.

  1. The Bible would be the country we live in.

  2. Each book of the Bible would be similar to cities within that country.

  3. Chapters would be similar to streets we live on.

  4. Verses would be similar to home addresses.

Genesis 32:22

Genesis would be similar to the city we live in.

Chapter 32 would be similar to the street we live on.

Verse 22 would be similar to our home address.

Bible Navigation Worksheets

Below you will find links to Bible navigation worksheets. Have your student find each verse listed and write the page number where that verse occurs in their Bible. Have the student also note if the book is in the New or Old Testament.
