Sweet, Sweet Summertime ReadingEncouraging Kids to Stay with the BooksReading throughout the summer in important. In fact, it's probably best for students to read at least four to five books over the summer to keep their reading skills sharp. Equally important is encouraging a desire to read. Ways to approach this include: making presentations about books, giving students a choice in what they read, finding ways for students to connect with books and others, and ensuring students have access to books before summer begins. Although there's not a lot of research on the point, studies have shown that students should read at least four to five books over the summer months in order to keep their skills strong. If they read fewer than that, they will probably lose ground. As for motivating children to read over the summer, choice is an important factor. Students should be allowed to choose what they want to read, "at least within reason". Below you will find a list of appropriate books for your child to read over the summer. After your student has completed reading their choice of books, have them complete a book report on the material they have read. I have included a paragraph rubric for your use when evaluating your student's writing. What is a Rubric?A rubric is a scoring tool that lists the criteria for a piece of work, or "what counts" (for example, purpose, organization, details, voice, and mechanics are often what count in a piece of writing); it also articulates gradations of quality for each criterion, from excellent to poor. The term defies a dictionary definition, but it seems to have established itself, so I continue to use it Suggested Reading For Fourth GradersFavorite Authors
